~ Like a Friday night B-Movie Horror flick it seems like we’ve all seen this plot before; the United States, Great Britain and France are on the verge of war against Syria.
Earlier in the week we all saw the ugly images; men, women, children dead by the hundreds (perhaps nearly a thousand) killed by some type of chemical weapon(s).
Imagine waking up in your own home to find your spouse and children all dead……it’s worse than a nightmare
U.S. President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry have both gone on the record saying that there must be a response by Western countries to what the Syrian Government did to the rebels this past week; it’s been referred to by Kerry as “A Moral Obscenity’.
However, as Western countries have begun banding together to decide what kind of military action to take against the Syrian Government; Russia and China are clearly not dancing the same two-step as they are both clearly bending the other way. In fact, Russia has made it clear that they are going to continue supplying the Syrian Government with weapons.
Here are the facts as we can tell;
1) Western countries didn’t want to get involved in the Syrian conflict but when the Syrian government used chemical weapons to murder ‘innocent’ women and children, Western leaders feel they have been forced to intervene.
2) Russia doesn’t make a ton of money off the weapons they sell to Syria (less than 1% of Russia’s total Arm’s sales) The reason Russia is backing the Syrian Government is that they don’t trust the Religious Rebels; Russia’s reasoning is that they would rather have a crazy secular government running Syria than what they believe to be a militant Religious rebels which they believe would be more dangerous.
It’s pretty wild to be sitting here in the United States and trying to make heads or tails of what the hell is going on.
President Obama was elected to the office of President almost entirely due to his anti-war stance against the Bush regime over the past decade.
Since he has become President, Obama’s foreign affairs policies have been right out of the playbook of George W. Bush and his cohorts.
Let me go on the record;
1) I don’t know what we should do in Syria, I’m neither supporting President Obama nor am I opposing him.
2) I don’t know who should be in charge of Syria; I neither trust the Syrian Government nor do I trust the Rebels.
Isn’t this how so much of life is; conflict that is difficult to navigate?
War is ugly and evil.
What the Syrian government has done in recent weeks and what they’ve been doing for years is evil and abhorrent……but I don’t know what the answer is.
Obviously, the only ‘true’ answer is for both sides to stop the conflict and to sit down and work things out…..but we all know that isn’t going to happen anytime soon.
A young friend of mine is a die-hard ideologue. He believes that humanity at its core is filled with love and that all we have to do is get people to sit down and ‘reason together’ then we can all live in peace and harmony…….
Sadly, history is not on my friend’s side.
As much as it would be nice to believe such things…….we all know that there is no magic wand which can be waved over Syria to get the conflict to end.
For those of us who have children; we know that sometimes an adult has to step in and separate two opposing factions. “Sally you go to your room and Bobby you go to yours! You both need time away fro each other!”
Unfortunately, none of us are big enough to go over to Syria and give both sides a ‘time-out’.
I support peace……but so what?
What does ‘peace’ mean in the face of humanity that has lost all sense of reason?
During the 1980’s as a child….I can clearly remember thinking ‘someday the Middle East will stop warring among each other’………was that nothing more than a child’s fantasy?
Will there ever be peace in the Middle East?
Will Western Countries like the United States ever stop meddling in foreign affairs?
Should the U.S. stop meddling? Should they keep meddling?
I swear, it seems like we’ve been dealing with the same damn issues for the past fifty years! Is there any end in sight to all this bull shit?
My heart really goes out to the people in Syria….but what can I do?
My heart and hand is heavy this morning as I reach for my next cup of coffee,
